Today we’re going to talk about one of my absolute favorite Etsy shops, Backseam lingerie! I had the honor of being their very first customer, when I ordered their Black Swan set which I reviewed here. I was incredibly impressed by their accommodation of my unusual size request, and their ability to alter their pattern and designs to better fit me. Custom lingerie is a risk (particularly from a brand new store), but I am confident in recommending Backseam’s abilities in it. Backseam is a Ukrainian, vintage-inspired brand designed by Alena Danchenko. Their prices are very affordable, with full sets (including underwired options) ranging from $35 to $96. You can shop their Etsy store here.
I’ve been talking to Alena for a while to find more out about her inspiration and upcoming collection, and I’m so excited to share it with you guys!
What was your inspiration behind this collection?
Alena: I have always liked the combination of lace and tulle. As for me, it is generally the best that can be design lingerie. In this collection we have focused exactly on this combination.
What is your personal favorite piece of lingerie in the collection?
Alena: My favorite set has become the black satin set. It describes my passion for the combination of satin and lace most clearly, as well as my love for all urban trends with the addition of decorative ribbons in the sets.
Grace: This is my favorite set too! I’ll never be over the strappy look, especially when it’s done in a way that looks so luxurious. I adore the satin quarter cup with chantilly lace. I can’t believe this set costs under $100!
What is your training, and how long have you been designing/making lingerie for?
Alena: I’ve finished the tailoring corsetry courses, practiced a lot and learned from own mistakes. In September, I will have been doing it seriously for two years.
What is the size range that Backseam’s custom range can cover?
Alena: We can sew any size =) . To do this, we take measurements, make a 3D model of the woman, and real-time look at how the item will fit the body. The only thing for very large breast size, the time of waiting for the order increases, because we order accessories to required size.
Grace: That’s fantastic news! There are so few companies making strappy, and classic-boudoir pieces in fuller bust sizes. I’m excited to try out some of your bralette styles as well, because there is never anything standardly made to fit a ribcage like mine.
What is your dream for Backseam as a brand?
I want a wide network of shops and to enter the European market. As well as actively developing individual tailoring at the atelier to make Backseam lingerie available to the maximum number of consumers.
Why did you decide to start your own lingerie brand?
For me, Lingerie – is not just a daily requirement of every woman. This is primarily an art. Inspired by global trends and acquired experience of generations, I try to create something that will be both comfortable, beautiful and it will inspire you to make your system feel wonderful, every day=)
